My name is Paul Hopkins I am a loving father of two a boy now 11 and a girl now 12, who after the absolute hell that their mother has put the three of us through, they both chose to live with me and CAFCASS and the Family Courts in Coventry agreed I would be able to take better care of the children and gave me full residence ie full legal custody. We are now divorced and I divorced her for adultery, meaningless in law but it gave me a little bit of satisfaction.

Three years ago, and the week before Christmas I had taken my children out shopping for ‘christmas presents!’ I was infact temporarily staying with a friend, as we were separating and I was due to move back into the family home after Christmas and she was to have moved into a new house, or so I believed! The agreement was that she would keep the children, but that I would have regular weekly contact two or three days a week (this is in brief).

Anyway we were out shopping and one of the presents was a remote control car which I had brought for my son, we went back to the house where I went in to put the batteries on charge. Entering the house I went to go to the toilet which was ensuite in the master bedroom. Unfortunately the curtains were drawn and the lights were out, I opened the door to find Helen in bed with someone I now know as Lee Steemson from Derby ( a third rate neanderthal rugby player, who played rugby for Derby City Rugby Club ). He immediately jumped out of bed ‘completely naked’ attacked me breaking my nose, being in the dark I didn’t see him lunge at me and punch me until I came round a second or two later finding myself partially down the stairs where I had fortunately hit my back against the upright of the stairs ( otherwise I would have fell backwards possibly breaking my neck).

Lee steemson had attacked me completely unprovoked, I was dazed and with a blooded nose he went to puch me again, but by this time Helen who also was completely naked was trying to stop Lee Steemson from continuing his attack. Dazed, I fell backwards grabbing anything I could to stop myself falling which happened to be the arm of my ex wife, we both fell but as I was fully dressed and wearing a thick winter coat and she was naked guess who ended up with a few scratches! Unfortunately she fell awkwardly (medical evidence and her own testimony agreed with this), which caused a minor fracture of her fore arm, it was this break which allowed the Police to say it was GBH (grievous Bodily Harm Section 18 (with intent) or section 20 Assault.

I was charged with Section 18 Assault, which if convicted has a MINIMUM 4 years imprisonment even for a first offence, as GBH with intent is such a serious offence where only the most violent menaces to society are charged, what is even more disturbing is that Section 18 Assault is usually only used where a weapon is involved and there is premeditated intent to do physical bodily harm to someone.

I went to the Police station, still with my children, where I was arrested and charged with GBH, I was not able to see my children for over a year, the courts even ruled that if I so much as phoned them or even went to meet them at their school I would be arrested. I was at the time a local leader in the Cubs (with no criminal record), they were fully aware of what had happened and the severity of the charges but as I was a well respected member of the Scouting Association and liked and respected by the 8 to 10 year old cubs, they had no problem with me continuing in my position.
